James had about 14 children from at least 3 wives; he left a will naming these children and a few grandchildren.

He was a Major in the Regulators, a Lt. Col. in the SC Militia, he performed the first overt act of the revolution in SC by attacking Star Fort and capturing its Commander and all their ammunition which was the objective set out for him by his colonel in charge. He and other commanders were less fortunate and submitted to a truce surrendering Ninety-Six: http://www.nps.gov/nisi/
