Dolores Jean Hazen was born to Lammert and Tena (Sangen) Elenga on January 20, 1930 at Sterling, Nebraska. She passed away January 28, 2020 at 91 years of age. She attended kindergarten at Sterling Public Schools, 1st-8th grade at Stoney Point District #51 and 9th -12th at Vesta High School. After graduation, Dolores worked at the dime store in Tecumseh. Her father, Lammert was an architect and construction worker from Holland and designed several buildings throughout Johnson County including the community building in Tecumseh.

Dolores was united in marriage to Richard L. Hazen in Sidney, IA. She and Richard had a wonderful life raising their family on the farm. She loved bowling, square dancing in the community building. Dolores was an excellent seamstress and made her square dance dress and Richard’s shirt for dancing. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and loved her church and helping others.

She was a wonderful housewife and mother. She enjoyed taking care of many foster children and adopted three children. Dolores loved baking, making homemade peanut brittle, doing crafts, gardening and taking care of her animals. She belonged to an extension club and loved meeting with other ladies in the club, gathering flowers and enjoying each other’s company. She moved to Colorado to be closer to family after her husband Richard passed away July 10, 1998.

Dolores passed away in Canon City, Colorado on January 28, 2021 at the age of 91 years.

She is survived by her children, Deborah (Jerry) Elliot, Richard Hazen, Jr., John Hazen, Carrie (Jay) Hammel and Beth (Brian) Hixson, grandchildren, James, Adam, Clint, Ryan, Cameron, Kaitlyn, Danielle, Trevor, J.R., Shelby, Jesse, Savanna, Braxton and Brianna, along with 17 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dolores was preceded in death by her parents, husband Richard Hazen, Sr, grandson, Markie, brothers: Harold Elenga, Johan Elenga, Norman (Hazel)Elenga, Lester Elenga and Reynold Elenga, sisters: Fannie, Gertrude (Marion Stuteville) and Johanna (Al Benge), brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Donald and Della Hazen. ​

Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 12, 2021 at the Tecumseh Cemetery, Tecumseh, Nebraska with Pastor Rob Clark officiating. The service will be livestreamed on the Wherry Mortuary/Wherry Monument Facebook page for those unable to attend in person.
