ETHEL JOHNSON
Mary Ethel Johnson, 87 of La Plata, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 28, 1979 in Ft. Worth, Texas, where she was spending the winter months with her daughter.
Born Sept. 6, 1891 in Macon County, she was the daughter of Frank J. and Lilly (Scobee) Dawdy. She was married to Watt Johnson Dec. 23, 1908, and he preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death was a brother, Leslie E. Dawdy.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. George (Bethana) Esselman of Ft. Worth; her son-in-law, Dr. George Esselman of Ft. Worth; three grandchildren, Doug, Karen and Greg; two great-grandchildren, Angela and Summer; one nephew, Charles "Buddy" Dawdy of La Plata; and one niece, Mary Ethel Walker of Kirksville.
She and her husband owned and operated the Johnson Shoe Store for many years in La Plata. She was the Past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, La Plata Chapter #59, a member of the Fortnightly Club MFWC, Loyal Berean Sunday School Class and the La Plata Christian Church, where she taught a primary class for over 30 years.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the La Plata Christian Church. Her grandson, Greg Esselman, who is studying to become a minister, gave the eulogy. Burial was in the La Plata Cemetery under the direction of the Pollock Funeral Home.
