HEART ATTACK TAKES LIFE OF WATT JOHNSON IN DETROIT, MICHIGAN
A heart attack ended an eight-month retirement for a prominent La Plata businessman Saturday when Watt Johnson died at the home of his daughter in Detroit, Michigan. He was 66 years old.
Johnson, owner of a La Plata shoe store for 32 years, retired from business last April. Since then he and his wife have divided their time between La Plata and their daughter's home in Detroit. Johnson's health had been fairly good until Thanksgiving when a mild stroke hospitalized his briefly. Last Saturday evening he had gone to bed but was awakened by a pain in his chest. He was sitting on the edge of the bed when death came quickly.
Johnson was born in Macon County, Oct. 7, 1887, the son of William H. and Eliza Johnson. He attended school in La Plata and on Dec. 24, 1908 he married Mary Ethel Dawdy. That same year he managed the newly opened shoe dept. in the Tansil-Grantges store.
In 1921 Johnson went into business for himself, opening a shoe store on the south side of La Plata's square. Later he moved into the store known as Bruce's Shoe Store, which he and Mrs. Johnson operated for 30 years. During his career in La Plata, Johnson's name was connected with many facets of civic endeavor. He was one of the original members of the La Plata Golf Club and helped build the course. He served terms on the La Plata City Council and the board of the Christian church.
Surviving are his wife, Ethel; a daughter, Mrs. George Esselman of Detroit, Michigan; and two brothers, J. Ed Johnson of the Hazel Dell community, and Johnnie Johnson of Paris, Illinois.
His parents and two sisters, Mrs. Lula Waters and Mrs. Ella Mason, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the La Plata Christian Church. Burial was in the La Plata Cemetery. Wilson Funeral Home was in charge.
