Vernon Charles Rainey of Gaithersburg, age 83, died December 10, 2018 in Bethesda, MD from Pancreatic cancer that was discovered December 3, 2018. He was born September 12, 1935 in Biwabik, MN the son of the late John Michael Rainey Jr. (Reinikainen) and Suoma Emilia Salonen Anderson Rainey. He is survived by his wife of 46 Years Patricia Ann Umberger Rainey.

Vernon attended Biwabik Elementary and Horace Mann High School in Biwabik. He served his country in the Army serving in the Signal Communications Security. Vernon's working career started in high school when his summer job was hand mowing the local cemetery and also frying donuts and delivering baked goods for his brother Osmo's bakery. After high school he went to work at the Duluth Mesabi and Iron Range Railroad pounding spikes and then later as a gandy dancer (oiler) for the iron ore cars. After these jobs he went to college and graduated from Virginia Junior College in Virginia, MN and the University of Minnesota School of Business with a BA in business. He was proud of himself because he also held many construction jobs while in college to pay for his education. He worked at the National Institutes of Health and retired from the National Cancer Institute. In retirement years Vernon and Pat traveled the USA and Canada in their RV. They camped in every state in the lower 48 visiting friends they made along the many trips they enjoyed. Vernon was an avid hunter and sportsman. As a young man he enjoyed the Minnesota woods and trapping animals to sell their hides. He loved to fish the Minnesota lakes with his nephew Randy. He also loved to deer hunt with his best friend Roy Hiltner for over 55 years. He also was a gifted and talented artist although he never pursued his talent. He was very proud to be a first-generation American as his parents both immigrated from Finland in their youth.

Vernon is survived by a daughter, Michelle Suzette Rickett and partner Albin Lee Eichelberger of Clear Spring, MD. He is also survived by grandchildren, Amanda Leigh McHenry and partner Christopher Eugene Biser, Brittney Nichole McHenry Martz and husband Dylan Matthew Martz and Ronnie Lee McHenry Jr. and wife Brandi, and two great-grandchildren, Hayden Louise Biser and Alexis Amber McHenry.

Vernon is predeased by his parents, grandparents John Michael Reinikainen and Kaisa Ahonen Reinikainen of Finland and Kalle and Seratia Emelia Maki Salonen of Finland. Also a twin brother, Robert John Rainey, and step brothers Osmo Arnold Anderson and Reino Ensio Anderson.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00AM, Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701. Inurnment will be private.
