Prime Minister of France. He was a Gaullist politician, who served as prime minister from June 20, 1969 to July 6, 1972. Prior to becoming prime minister, he was educated in political science and law and worked as a journalist before joining the army in 1938. He served in the French resistance underground with Charles de Gaulle. He became a general at age 29. In 1947 he became mayor of Bordeaux and would serve until 1995. He was President of the National Assembly of France from December 9, 1959 to June 24, 1969. He would serve in that position twice more after leaving the prime minister position. During his tenure as prime minister, government authority over the mass media was relaxed, while legislation was passed for social welfare coverage for the poor and elderly. Periodic increases were made to the minimum wage which prevented greater wage disparities. A new legal aid system was introduced, along with a number of new social welfare benefits. He is best remembered for his role in the French resistance and his close relationship with the Allies facilitating the entry into Paris. Owing in large part to his efforts, the city was taken with a minimum loss of life. He retired from public life in 1995.
