Doris Jean Hoover
March 24, 1933 - December 29, 2020
Elk Grove, California - Doris Jean Bartlett Hoover was born March 24, 1933 in Stuart, Nebraska in the heart of the Great Depression. She was the daughter of Louis Franklin Bartlett and Lois Isabel Stanton Bartlett, and the fourth child of seven. Her parents worked their 320-acre farm with no running water or electricity. They lit their home with kerosene lamps and cooked on a wood stove. She attended the Pioneer School, a one-room school house where half her classmates were her siblings.
Her family moved to Yuba City, CA in 1947, and she graduated from Yuba City High School in 1950. She married her husband Henry Amos Hoover of 63 years in 1951, and they made their first home in Pittsburg, California at Camp Stoneman where Henry ran the stockade during the Korean War. Jean worked as a telephone operator for Pacific Bell. She held her operator post through the Yuba City flood of 1955 for which she received the Theodore Vail medal for bravery.
In 1959 Jean and Henry settled in San Jose, CA, where they raised 2 children, Regina and Roderic (Gina and Rod). She loved working in her garden, baking and sewing. When Jean and Henry moved to Elk Grove, CA in 1977, Jean worked as a supervising telephone operator for the State of California. She and Henry spent 30 years of retirement together before he died in 2015. They loved to garden and travel to Hawaii, their favorite vacation spot, and Jean was dubbed 'The Cookie Lady' after sharing her home-baked cookies each week with new friends at the Elk Grove Senior Center.
Jean had a kind and generous spirit, a ready wit, and a love of music. She was an exceptional storyteller and a champion of women's rights. Her neighbors enabled her to continue living independently in her home, where she spent her last Christmas with grandson Jack, making her traditional sugar cookies, which she has shared with friends and family for over 50 Christmases. She passed away four days later, on Dec. 29, 2020 at age 87.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Gina Jett (Dan) and Rod Hoover (Ingrid), grandchildren Jack Jett (Barbara), Natalie Dagenais (Paul) and Eric Jett (Krista), and great-grandchildren, Harlan and Isla Jett and Amelie Dagenais. She has four siblings who survived her: Vern Bartlett, Amos Bartlett (who died Jan. 10, 2021), Marilyn Visic and Karolyn (Kelly) Godat, and has 2 sisters who predecease her: Bonnie Castaneda and Mina Allen. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who loved their "Aunt Jean," and many friends and family members who considered her their second mom or grandma.
