Services for J. Virgil Herring, 87, 5801 Bethel Ave., Westminster Village, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Hazelwood Christian Church. Entombment will be in Elm Ridge Cemetery. Calling will be 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Meeks Mortuary and at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Dr. Herring died Monday at the Bryn Mawr (Pa.) Terrace Convalescent Center. He was born in Bartholomew County and graduated from Scipio High School. His bachelor's degree was from Ball State University and his master's and doctor's degrees were from Indiana University. He also attended Franklin College, the University of Colorado and the University of Minnesota.
He became a certified public accountant in 1964. He was awarded postdoctoral fellowships by the H.J. Heinz Foundation for Economic Education and Arthur Andersen and Co.
Before World War II he taught in several one-room schools in Jennings and Bartholomew counties and served as principal, teacher and coach in Coesse, Falmouth, Fort Wayne and Union City, Ind.
During World War II he taught at the Naval Training School at Indiana University. He served on the faculties of Tri-State College, Indiana University and Ball State University, where he was chairman of the Accounting Department and the George A. Ball Distinguished Professor of Business.
Among his memberships were the American Accounting Association, American Institute of CPAs, Indiana State Teachers Association, Delta Pi Epsilon, Pi Omega Pi and the Exchange Club. After retirement he was active in the Indiana State Teachers Association and was a docent at the Minnetrista Cultural Center. At the time of his death he was vice president of the Westminster Village Residents Association.
For more than 40 years he was an active member of Hazelwood Christian Church where he served as an elder and taught Sunday school.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. Richard J. Herring, Bryn Mawr, Pa., and Don P. Herring, M.D., Lake Oswego, Ore.; three grandchildren, Laura and Michael Herring, both of Bryn Mawr, and Alexander J. Herring, Lake Oswego, Ore.; his sister, Grace Meyer, Calumet; and four nieces and a nephew.
His wife, Irene P. Herring, four sisters and a brother are deceased.
Memorials may be sent to the Hazelwood Christian Church Building Fund, the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
