Death of Major Matthews.
Major William B. Matthews died at his home, on the Wicomico river, in Charles county, October 2, in the seventy-first year of his age, of paralysis. He sustained no less than four attacks within the last three years. His life was that of a typical Southern planter. He was one of the largest land and slave-holders in Southern Maryland. He never held public office, but was a democrat of the old school. Three sons and four daughters survive him. One of his daughters is the wife of Bishop Kinloch Nelson, of Georgia. He was buried Monday at the Protestant Episcopal Cemetery, near La Plata. The pallbearers were Gen. L. Allison Wilmer, Samuel Cox, Jr., John H. Reeder, James Dorset and W.B.S. Chapman.
