LEMON S. COLLINS LAID TO REST TODAY (WED.)
Lemon S. Collins, pioneer resident of this community passed to his eternal reward early Monday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. M. Loudermilk on East Washington Street. Mr. Collins had been in his usual health and his death came as a shock and surprise, not only to his immediate family but to all his relatives and friends. He retired at his usual hour Sunday evening, apparently as well as ever. When he did not arise at his accustomed hour Monday morning, Mrs. Loudermilk went to his room and called her father, receiving no answer she opened the door and found him reclining in his usual position, one arm thrown above his head, but death had overtaken him, evidently in his sleep and he apparently passed away without a struggle whatever.
Lemon S. Collins was the son of David and Mary Collins. He was born in Jackson township, Starke County, Indiana, February 15, 1856 and departed this life January 28, 1935 at the age of 78 years, 11 months, 3 days. He was educated in the public schools of Jackson township and spent all his life in this community.
On September 24, 1880, Mr. Collins was united in marriage with Miss Matilda A. Dunkelberger, a childhood playmate. They established their home in Jackson township and continued to live there until the passing of his wife and helpmate in 1903. To this union five children were born, namely: Clyde C., Mrs. Pearl Loudermilk, Mrs. Blanche Rogers, Mrs. Hazel Hall and Loyde Lester, all of Knox.
Following the death of Mrs. Collins, Mr. Collins moved his family to Knox where he continued to make his home until his death. He was associated with various progressive projects in the community and was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand whenever it was necessary. His pleasing personality, fair-mindedness and rugged honesty made for him a host of admiring friends. Whatever task he undertook and under whosever direction he worked he worked he was found to be a favorite not only with those in authority but with his associates and fellow workmen.
Early in life Mr. Collins united with the Christian Church, assuming his part and obligation of its work. He was a regular attendant at its services whenever it was possible for him to be there and was interested in its every activity.
Surviving to mourn his passing are his five children; thirteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Collins of Logansport and Walter Collins of Athol, South Dakota; one sister, Mrs. Janet Turnspaugh of Logansport; and a host of other relatives and a wide circle of friends.
Funeral services were conducted at the Christian Church Wednesday afternoon in charge of Rev. Hugh M. Rullen. Interment was made in the Hepner Cemetery near the old home at Rye.
