Elizabeth's father was born in Antietam, Maryland, in Frederick County. Her Grandfather, John Hill, was born in Antietem Creek, Maryland. Her Grandfather John and her Grandmother Elizabeth Buher (1743-1800) traveled with their son, Elizabeth's father, Samuel, from the east coast to Clermont County, Ohio around 1800. Elizabeth's Great Grandfather Henry Hill (1695-1773) was born and lived in Frederick County, Maryland. Elizabeth's family is rich in American history.

Elizabeth was the second of ten children. They are: Thomas S (1799-1877), Elizabeth Hill (1801-1875), John B (1804-1884), Mary "Polly" Catherine (1807-1852), Philip Alexander (1810-1881), George C (1812-1851), Francis Asbury (1814-1879), Amos (1817-1897), Benjamin A (1820-1851) and Rebecca (1822-1902). Elizabeth married John N South (1795-1856) around 1820. Elizabeth was 19 years old and John N was 25 years old. Between 1822 and 1844 they had eleven children. Seven of them died with in days except John who lived from 1838 through 1849 and Lucinda who lived from 1841 through 1847. They had four children who survived into adulthood. Andrew Jackson (1828-1907) and Philip (1843-1893) married and had children. They also had two daughters: Louisa (1844-) and Susannah E (1844-).

Elizabeth's husband, John N South, died in 1856. Elizabeth lived in Monterey at this time with her daughter Louisa. Her son Philip and his wife Charity lived next door to Elizabeth. Two doors up Elizabeth's son Phillip, his wife Missouri and their 8 children lived. During Elizabeth's later years after she lost her husband, John, she was able to be near and know her grandchildren. She lived with her children and grandchildren close-at-hand for the 19 years after the loss of her husband.

Having lost seven or more children in her youth, she was fortunate to have her children, Andrew J, Philip, Louisa, Susannah and her grandchildren give her a joyful life throughout her later years.

Elizabeth died June 17, 1878 at the age of 77, at her home in Monterey with her children and grandchildren at her bedside. Elizabeth was buried in the Boston Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery in Owensville, Ohio, near her husband John.
