(NOTE: As of January of 2024, it appears that Harrison Young has no living direct descendants.
Harrison Young probably never sat for a portrait prior to the outbreak of the Civil War. During the 10 months the 86th was garrisoned in and around Nashville in 1862/63, most of the men and boys of the 86th took the time to sit for a portrait to send home to their loved ones back home. These pictures came in several forms. There were what was called "Daguereotypes" or "tin types" and then there the new fangled were paper pictures, which were called CDV's. If a CDV was made, which was the most common, many copies were usually purchased, not only to send home to their loved ones, but also to swap among their messmates and tentmates.
Harrison survived the war and lived late into the 19th century. During the years after the war, Harrison probably had his picture taken dozens of times. I would love to see a copy of Harrison's CDV be added to his Find A Grave Memorial for the benefit of all with an interest in seeing this veteran of the Civil War and for the Princeville Historical Association, if he did have one made, but, at this time, I would be just thrilled to see some pictures of him as an older man. Can anyone help me? Thanks, Baxter)

When French had about 100 volunteers, he led the Princeville Company to Peoria, Illinois where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. On August 27, 1862, French and 95 of his volunteers were mustered into the service as Co. K of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
On September 7, 1862, the men of the 86th Illinois marched out of the gates of Camp Lyon to the railroad depot. There they were joined by the men of the 85th Illinois, who had been mustered into the service at Camp Peoria. Together, at the depot, the men of the 85th & 86th boarded trains headed for Jeffersonville, Indiana and Camp Joe Holt, which were located across the river from Louisville, Kentucky. Three weeks later, the 85th and 86th Illinois were in the field in Kentucky as part of Colonel Daniel McCook's Brigade chasing Confederate troops. On Oct. 8, 1862, just six weeks after they had been mustered into the service, the men of the 86th Illinois were engaged with those Confederate troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, suffering their first casualties. There would be many more during the next two and a half years.
During the next two and a half years, Harrison served faithfully in Co. K, participating in and witnessing some of the most brutal and bloody fighting in the Western Theatre of the war. This included the Battles of Chickamauga, Georgia; Resaca, Georgia; Rome, Georgia, Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia; Peach Tree Creek, Georgia; Jonesboro, Georgia; Averysboro, North Carolina and Bentonville, North Carolina. These last two Union victories helped to halt Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston from joining up with General Robert E. Lee, which helped to bring and end to the war. Harrison also participated in General Sherman's infamous "March to the Sea" in late 1864. Remember between the Battles of Peach Tree Creek, Georgia in July of 1864 and the Battle of Jonesboro, Georgia in late August and early September of 1864, Harrison's father, Charles Young, died on August 23, 1864 back in Princeville, Illinois. From information received from J L Yeoman, a great great great nephew of Harrison Young's, when word was received of his father's failing health, Harrison Young was able to get a furlough on or about June 10, 1864 to go home and he is believed to have been at home when his father died of Heart failure on August 23, 1864. Harrison Young probably rejoined his unit in September of 1864 and if he did arrive before the "March to the Sea" began, probably caught up with his unit during the march.
After the war came to an end, the surviving members of McCook's Brigade marched on to Washington D.C. where in May of 1865, the marched down Pennsylvania Avenue on the 2nd day of the Grand Review. Private Harrison Young, now probably 22 years of age, was still there with the surviving members of the 86th Illinois when they were mustered out of the service there in Washington, D.C. Shortly afterward the surviving members of the 86th Illinois where put on a train bound for Chicago, where they received their final pay and were discharged. By the end of June of 1865, the surviving members of the 86th Illinois where home with their families in Central Illinois.
There is a marriage of Harrison Young to Margaret Anderson on the IL Statewide Marriage Index which, I presume, is the marriage record.(August 22, 1866 in Peoria Co., IL).
On August 22, 1866, Harrison was married to Margaret "Maggie" Anderson in Peoria County. Margaret is believed to have been born about 1848/47 in Illinois, probably the daughter of Charles Anderson and Mary (________) Anderson. The Anderson family is found residing in the City of Peoria at the time of the 1850 census;

Mary (_________) Anderson is believed to have died sometime between the time of the 1850 census and the time of the 1860 census. Mary is believed to be the Mary C. Anderson who was born in 1818 and who died in 1860 and who is found buried on the South Bluff Division of Springdale Cemetery in Peoria, Illinois.
At the time of the 1870 census, Charles N. Anderson is found residing in Ward 5 of the City of Peoria;

In 1887, the surviving members of the 86th Illinois held a reunion in Peoria on the 25th Anniversary of the mustering in of the men of the regiment, August 27, 1887. This became an annual event, always being held during the week of August 27th and continued through 1923, when it was decided by the survivors at that point that they were too old and too few to continue the reunions after 1923.
Harrison Young never attended any of these reunions, though he was apparently still residing in Peoria during those early reunions. Harrison Young is known to have been a resident at the Peoria County Farm, in Limestone Township and may have been in poor health at this time, though he would only have been in his mid 40's.
Private Harrison Young died on June 8, 1890 at the age of 45/46 and his earthly remains were laid to rest in the Princeville Township Cemetery near those of his father. The earthly remains of Harrison's mother, Susannah, were laid to rest between those of her husband and her son, Harrison, when she died in 1900.

(Baxter would love to hear from anyone, especially descendants of the Youngs, who might be able to add to the biographical history of Harrison Young and perhaps shed some light on where Margaret (Anderson) Young might be buried. Baxter would also love to get copies of any photographs of Harrison which might have survived the years, especially any of him in uniform from his days in Co. K for his Find A Grave site and for the Princeville Historical Society.)
(NOTE: As of January of 2024, it appears that Harrison Young has no living direct descendants.
Harrison Young probably never sat for a portrait prior to the outbreak of the Civil War.

On August 22, 1866, Harrison was married to Margaret "Maggie" Anderson in Peoria County. Margaret is believed to have been born about 1848/47 in Illinois, probably the daughter of Charles Anderson and Mary (________) Anderson.
