Herman “Sonny” William Peters, Jr., 90, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 2, 2021, surrounded by family and friends at his home in Carrollton, Missouri.

Herman was born in Marshall, Missouri on February 4, 1930, to Herman William Peters, Sr. and Virginia White Peters. He was raised in Waverly, Missouri and at a young age discovered a love for photography and collecting stamps. Throughout his school years he was active in Boy Scouts and eventually earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Waverly High School in the Class of 1948 and went on to attend one year of college. Herman returned from school to work for the family business, Peters Orchards, and married his love Marsella Trantham in 1951. In 1952, Herman was drafted to the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War in Germany. Upon the end of his service, he returned home to continue to work at the family business for nearly thirty-five years before retiring.

In his retirement, Herman enjoyed spending the winter months in Florida fishing on Lake Okeechobee and spending time with friends there. He continued to work on his stamp collection, which he had maintained for eighty years, and shared a love of collecting and restoring antique furniture with his wife. He began collecting trains and enjoyed sharing his knowledge and love of trains with anyone he encountered. Herman loved to spend time with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and tell them stories of his youth and adventures in Europe during the war.

Herman served the community by holding many leadership roles throughout his life including president of the Missouri State Horticulture Society, president of the Waverly Cemetery Board, and as an ordained deacon of the Baptist church.

Herman Peters will always be remembered for his adventurous spirit, generous heart, and love for his family.

Herman is survived by his wife of 69 years and three sons, H. Mark Peters and wife Gail of Leawood, KS, Byron Peters and wife Cheryl of Waverly, MO, and Lyle Peters and wife Lori of Scottsdale, AZ; seven grandchildren, Nathan Peters and wife Laura, Dr. Eric Peters and wife Kamala, MD, Dr. Charlie Peters and wife Beth, Sarah Peters, Dana Phillips and husband Stetson, 1st Lt. Nolan Peters and wife Sarah, and Shannon Peters; seven great-grandchildren, Mirabel Peters, Coralie Peters, Aurelia Peters, Elliot Peters, Charlie Peters, Natalie Peters, and Brett Phillips; one brother, Jack Peters and wife Darlene of Waverly, MO, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Hannah Peters.

In lieu of flowers, for those who would like to make a memorial contribution, the family respectfully suggests they be made to the Waverly Cemetery Assoc. Trust. Contributions may be mailed to The Peters Family, 28723 Highway 24, Waverly, MO 64096.
