Laura's life was certainly filled with challenges and losses; her mother died sometime between 1855, after the birth of her last child, Amanda, and the 1860 census where her father, Nathan, is listed as a widower. In 1878, Her husband, Abijah, dies at the age of 45, leaving her with 10 children, age 22 down to one. She has lost two sons to death at young ages. One year later her father, Nathan Wait, passes, [his grave is located at the Walnut Lake Cemetery, Walnut Lake Twp, Faribault Co., MN]. He died 6 May 1877, age 82 yrs, 10 mo., & 12 days.

Mrs. Laura Baker, mother of Dr. HW Baker of Montivideo, died at her son's home, 215 N 5th St., Friday Morning. She was 86 years old.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the home, at 2 o'clock, Rev. David Haupt, pastor of Grace Episcopal Church, officiating.
Mrs. Baker leaves 6 children, Henry of Montivideo, Perry & Bert of Wells, MN, Olive Holbrook, ND, Mrs. Jessie Jung [Youngs] of Renville, Minn., and Mrs. Essie [Effie] Herring of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Perry Baker of Wells attended the funeral services here Sunday.
