James Gilliland Stickler was a small child when his parents brought him in a covered wagon first to Adair County and then to Sullivan County, Missouri. He grew up in the village of Sticklerville, and his father trained him as a blacksmith. He and his brother Edward were the sons in "Stickler and Sons, wagon and carriage makers" of Green City, Sullivan County.

James Stickler "of Sticklerville" married "Miss Annie Singley" on Sept. 4, 1881 at "the bride's father's" in Sullivan County. The couple spent their entire lives in Sullivan County.

In addition to working as a blacksmith, James was at different times a farmer and a miller.
