William Barton-Taylor was born in Odiham on the 23rd of November 1851 the son of William Barton and his wife Frances Hunt. His father was a bricklayer. He was known as William Barton.

In 1861 they were living in Odiham High Street.

His mother died in 1864 and was buried at Odiham on the 15th of January 1864. His father married Elizabeth Spencer in 1866 and in 1871 they were living at the Swan Inn in North Warnborough where Elizabeth was the licensee. William had already left home and at some point adopted the surname Barton-Taylor.

He joined the army under the name William Taylor, said to be born at Alton who was a carpenter when he enlisted on the 14th of April 1869 for a term of twelve years, including terms in the West Indies and India. He was a Sergeant when he re-committed to service in Jersey on the 9th of April 1881 with the 2nd Battalion the Suffolk Regiment.

He married Caroline Mary Harmsworth in Paddington on the 2nd of June 1881.He gave his trade as carpenter and his father as William Barton-Taylor – in the army service papers for William Taylor he gives Caroline as his next-of-kin and the actual details of his marriage to her.

They had at least five children born between 1882 and 1897. The eldest Frances Mary was born in Jersey in 1882 (which fits with William’s commitment signed in April 1881). They then had two sons born in Ireland. William in 1884 and Archibald or Archie who was born in Cork in 1885. According to William Taylor’s records he was serving in Derry in 1880, Galway in 1882 and Cork in 1884, Curragh in 1886 and Aldershot in 1888. He was then discharged from service.

They were living in Reading when their daughter Ella Victoria was born in November 1891.

They had moved to Warwick Road in Kensington when their youngest child Alfred was born in 1897. In 1901 William was working as a superintendent in a furniture depository.
They moved to Ash Vale and in 1911 were living at The Weir with their sons Archie who was a painter and decorator and Alfred who was still at school. William was working as a carpenter.

In 1917 his wife died at was buried at Ash Cemetery on the 30th of April 1917.
When his daughter Ella married in 1919 she described her father as a retired Quarter-Master Sergeant implying that William was recalled for service of some kind of service in WW1 – although this is unlikely due to his age.

William died in August 1921 and was buried at Ash Cemetery on the 17th of August 1921
