Prinz Philipp von der Pfalz was a son of Friedrich V, Kurfürst von der Pfalz, r. 1610-1620, King of Bohemia, and his wife, Princess Elizabeth of England, daughter of King James I and his consort, Anne of Denmark. He paternal grandmother, Louise Juliana of Nassau-Orange, was a sister of the second wife of Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, Duc de Bouillon. He was killed at the Battle of Rethel.

He is not buried at the Heiliggeistkirche in Heidelberg, Stadtkreis Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. His remains were interred at the Temple de Sedan in 1930 when Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne and six members of his extended family (including by marriage) were reinterred at the site.
