Anne Hoover

Muncie - Anne Hoover, 74, passed away Friday, November 13, 2020 at her home in Muncie, Indiana. She was born in Raleigh, North Carolina on December 6, 1945, the daughter of Dr.Sydney and Mrs. Melissa Browne Smith.

Anne was a 1967 graduate of Goucher College, having earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history, with a minor in secondary education. She earned three post-graduate degrees: two from the University of Michigan, in Japanese studies (1971) and Psychology (1975); and a Masters in Landscape Architecture from North Carolina State (1979). For thirty years she taught in professional undergraduate and graduate programs in landscape architecture at public universities. Her research and publications in her field of specialization, cultural landscape preservation, have been shared with students, faculty, and clients in the classroom and in the field as well as at national and international conferences. Anne was dedicated to her involvement with UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) and AHLP (the Alliance for Historic Landscape Preservation). She is Professor Emerita of Landscape Architecture at Ball State University.

IN 1999 she was awarded a Fulbright Research Award to study the impacts of time in three of Japan's Edo Period stroll gardens. She also managed a practice in cultural landscape preservation. Her clients included the National Park Service; the States of Indiana, Alabama, and Massachusetts; Historic Mansion,Inc; Cardinal Greenway, and Monon Rail-Trail Master Plan of Indianapolis. Her firm has prepared master plans for public parks, estates, and gardens.

She was an active member of the BSU Women's Club and served on the executive board. She loved sports and was an avid BSU basketball fan. She had a special love for horses and was an accomplished horseback rider in her youth and contender for the Olympic team.

Anne grew up in North Carolina. Her southern upbringing was reflected by her graciousness, hospitality, and desire to do things properly.

She was adventurous and joyful. The world was her playground. Her enterprising spirit and dedication to UNESCO gave her the opportunity to explore many countries including; Russia, Mongolia, China, Africa, New Zealand and India. Her adventures included riding camels in the Gobi Desert and zip lining across Victoria Falls in Africa.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Her ashes will be buried between her parents at Historic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh, North Carolina .
