Gilman was the son of Casual Hampton Presson and Sarah Adaline (Cooper) Presson.

He married Nellie Mae Wilcox in Carroll CO, TN on December 08, 1934.

Gilman continued the "singing school" that his father had established. His "school" traveled to different communities in Carroll County, and the surrounding area.
