Mrs. J.M. Howes, 82, Leaves Sister Here
Mrs. Mary M. Howes, 82, widow of Jesse M. Howes, a native of Windsor and sister of Mrs. Linda M. Burnett of North Adams, died yesterday at the Sunny Acres Nursing Home in Williamsburg, following a very long illness.
She was born July 2, 1883 in Windsor, the youngest daughter of the late E. Addison and Josephine (Shaw) Miner. She was married at the Miner homestead in Windsor in 1903 and since had made her home in Swift River. She and her late husband, who died in 1950, had conducted a general store in Swift River since 1907. Mrs. Howes was postmistress there for more than 39 years and had retired in August, 1953. She also served as the Swift River correspondent for the Hampshire Gazette. She was a member of the Village Congregational Church of Cummington and of church societies. Prior to her marriage she was a teacher in Wendell and Shutesbury.
She leaves one daughter, Miss Josephine L. Howes at home; six sons, Martin K. and Raphael W. at home, M. Stebbins of Swift River, Milton A. and Lincoln S. of Cummington and Jesse Maurice Howes of Goshen.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Village Church, Cummington, and burial will be in the West Cummington Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours. Leslie L. Porter, Cummington funeral director, is in charge of arrangments. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
