Young member of the Murphy-Foster-Pike party that travelled to California at the same time as the ill-fated Donner party. He married Donner party survivor Virginia Reed (Blackenstoe) in 1850.

Father of nine: Mary M., Lloyd M., Mattie H., John Marion Jr., Virginia B., Julia Ada, Daniel James, Annie Mabel, and Thaddeus Stanley. John founded the California town of Murphy's (duh) in 1848 when he and his brother Daniel set up a trading post, hiring local Miwoks to mine for them, then some guy found gold at Sutters Mill, and the rush was on.

John Murphy left the town that carries his name in 1849 with $1,500,000 in gold. He moved back to San Jose where he first settled upon arriving in California.

He married Virginia and, not content to just live off of his riches, he served as Mayor of San Jose and the Sheriff of Santa Clara County. His son worked with him in his insurance business. A true California Pioneer.
