The Son of California Pioneers John M. Murphy and Virginia Reed-Murphy was born in San Jose in 1859. San Jose Daily Mercury, April 6, 1910.

Daniel Reed Murphy, member of a San Jose family distinguished in California history for many years, clerk at the Westminster Hotel in Los Angeles and one of the best-known men in San Jose as well as in Southern California, died in Los Angeles April 4. His health had failed and physicians have been unable to determine whether natural causes or a fall from a car a week ago brought the end. He was 50 years old.

His father, the late John M. Murphy, was the first Treasurer of Santa Clara County and afterward mayor and sheriff. His mother, Mrs. Virginia Reed-Murphy, who still resides in this city, is a survivor of the ill-fated Donner party.

His father was reputed at one time to have more gold than any man west of the Rocky Mountains, having accumulated a cash fortune of $2,000,000 in mining. John Murphy carried the order for the release of General Vallejo, imprisoned in Sutter's Fort, from Monterey, 126 miles, between sunrise and sunset.

Daniel R. Murphy of genial disposition and up to the time of his move to Los Angeles, nearly every resident of the county personally knew him. He was of medium stature, and to distinguish him from his cousin, Daniel M. Murphy, who was six feet tall and of corresponding proportions, the two were "Little Dan" and "Big Dan." Big Dan was a grandson of Martin Murphy Sr.

Daniel for some time employed as clerk at the Hotel Vendome, and when he left San Jose, it was to assume a similar position in Los Angeles. He leaves a widow, formerly, Miss Nellie Brady, whom he married in San Jose three years ago, his mother, Mrs. Virginia Reed-Murphy and two sisters, Julia Ada Murphy, the wife of Samuel P. Howes of the San Jose Abstract Company, the other is Mrs. William D. Sanborn.

The body will come here for burial and the funeral will be at Woodrow's Mortuary Chapel this morning at 9 o'clock, thence to St. Joseph's church. The interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in San Jose. Transcribed by Allen Rountree
