A Fatal Accident
Frank Hays, of Foxville, Dies of Injuries Received on Railroad
Frank Hays, of Foxville, this county, a freight brakeman on the Western Maryland Railroad, was fatally injured by being squeezed between two freight cars at Smithsburg about 11 o'clock yesterday morning. Young Hays died several hours later at the Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown.
When the local freight from Highfield to Hagerstown reached Smithsburg a car was run in on the switch Hays, who was on top, could not control the brake and the car ran against several others that were standing on the switch. The impact hurled Hays forward and he was caught between the running boards of the two cars. Before he could be released it was necessary to open the brakes of the cars that stood on the switch and let them run forward.
Dr Jarboe was summoned and he temporarily dressed Hays' injuries, which consisted of a badly crushed leg, between the knee and hip, besides internal injuries. He bled profusely. He was taken on the train to Hagerstown and taken to the hospital, Drs Scott, Darr and Wagaman having been summoned to attend. His death occurred short y after he reached the hospital.
Hays was aged about 18 years. Last spring he was injured in Hagerstown by being caught between cars. The remains were taken in charge of Undertakers Suter & Son and prepared for burial. The funeral took place today at 10 o'clock, with services at Bethel church at Garfield, by Rev. Edward Smith, and interment in the graveyard adjoining the church.
