Hiram was born in Brownlow, Magoffin County, the son of Benjamin Montgomery and Sarah Ellen (Gillum) Montgomery. On December 22, 1914 in Magoffin County, Kentucky he married (my Grandmother) Mary Ann (Montgomery) Wilson the daughter of William (Bill) Montgomery and Minta (Howard) Montgomery. They had four children,(my mother) Frozie (Montgomery) Tackett, Rainey, Leonard, and Menifee Montgomery. They moved from Kentucky to Ohio,
where he married his second wife, Eva (Evy) Montgomery on November 9, 1926, the daughter of Lee C. Montgomery and Cora Conley. They had seven children, Alma Jean (Montgomery) Rinehart, Elizabeth (Montgomery) White, Georgia (Montgomery) Baldwin, John Montgomery, Ronald Montgomery, Ed Montgomery and William O. "Joe" Montgomery. Eva passed away in 1970. My mother told me stories
from when she was a little girl about Grandpa. He was a high
spirited tall man standing 6'2". He was called Hiram "Red", because of his dark red hair. He must have made a striking figure sitting atop his Chestnut mare, with a shot gun across his lap riding through the hills of Kentucky.I remember him in his later years, when we would go to town, he would always be sitting on the steps of the Count House in Chillicothe (something he did everyday until he passed away) and always had candy sticks in his pocket for me. Hiram was employed at the Selective Service in 1942 at Lockbourne Airbase in Columbus, Ohio, and retired from the B&O Railroad.
