Benjamin and his two oldest sons went to work on a canal that was being built between Louisville and Shippensport, KY. The middle son, Albert, stayed home to mind the crops, which had been planted before the older Maces left. Benjamin was hoping to make enough money to buy a farm which he had always hoped to own. They started working on the canal about the middle of May 1826. Benjamin returned in August, very sick with yellow fever. He died a week or so later.
