Note: believe correct cemetery for his burial would be Riviere-du-Sud ancient Cemetery (Montmagny).

Jacob Gray (born 22 Apr 1793, Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY, son of Samuel Gray & Catharina Sutz), died 15 Apr 1862; location disputed, burial unknown (possibly destroyed), but estate in Kane Co., IL. He settled in Kane/Kendall Co. in the 1830's. A first wife died in NY; father of John Jost Gray by this marriage. Father of Hannah Gray Carpenter and Silas Gray, by 2nd wife, Mary S.

John H. Smith (born 1843 IL, son of Hoel & Catherine Smith), residence Aurora, Kane Co., Illinois, nativity Illinois, enlisted as a Private in Co. Recorded in 1860 Census, Naperville, DuPage Co., IL, and Aurora, Kane Co., IL, as Eliza Gray, age 26. Jacob Gray, Silas Gray, and the 2 McDonald children are in household.

It looks like both she and John fudged on their ages in the census records - but gravestone is in error by 2 years on death date, and 13-15 years on the age.

Census records for John H. Smith, before & after ones recorded with Eliza:

1860 Aurora Twp., Kane, IL, Hoel Smith, 57, born NY, Catherine, 71, born NY, Alexander, 19, born IL, John, 18, born IL, George, 14, born IL.

1895 Kansas Census, Agnes City, Lyon Co.: J. H. Smith, born IL, B. C. (male), 4, born KS, M. E. (female), 35, born NJ, Viola, 7, born KS, M. A. (female), 5, born KS.

1900 Census, Agnes City, Lyon, Kansas, John H. Smith, born June 1844 IL (parents born IN & KY), has been married 12 years to Mary E., born Aug 1860 NJ (parents born IRE & NJ); she is mother of 6 children, 6 living; 4 are recorded, all born in KS: Viola (Aug 1888), Maggie (Oct 1890), Benjamin (Oct 1894) and George (Aug 1897).

1910 Census, Agnes, Lyon, Kansas, John H. Smith is widowed, 66, born IL, parents born KY, with children Benjamin H., 17, George W., 12, and Stanton B., 9, all born KS.

1920 Census, Agnes, Lyon, KS, John H. Smith, 75, born IL, parents born IN/KY, is married (but no wife in household); son Stanton B., 16, born KS.

1930 Census, Star, Coffey, KS, John H. Smith, 86, widowed, born IL, parents born KY, is father-in-law, residing with Nova F. Hase, 50, Margaret A., 38 (parents born IL/NJ), their children Chester L., 20, Emery N., 13, and F. Hoyel, 9, all born KS.

Obituary of John's second wife gives her name as Maty Eva Hulsizer, born June 29, 1863, Warren Co., NJ. 1st husband not named, 2 children; married John A. [sic] Smith on 22 Oct 1887, Kansas City, MO, 9 children, 5 surviving; also 3 brothers and 1 sister. Obituary of daughter Margaret Hase mentions sisters Mrs. Viola Eads and Mrs. Will Crawford, brothers George, Ben, and Stanton Smith. (Mrs. Will Crawford was Elva Elsie Carter.)

John's parents: Hoyle or Hayle Smith married Catherina C. Helms on 21 Feb 1828 in Fountain County, Indiana. (This is several years after the birth of son Aaron Collins Smith. Based on their other children's records, it does appear that Helms is Catherine's maiden name.)

The obituary of John's brother George W. Smith (10 Jan 1846 Aurora, Illinois-16 Apr 1933 Kansas) states he served in the Civil War, as did his 4 brothers and their father. Have not found service records that match the father Hoel Smith; but there are records for a Hoel Smith, 1821-1884 (buried here), and a Hoel Smith born 1821 DC, residence Aurora, Illinois, enlisted 17 Feb 1865 Aurora. This may be a brother, or may be the father with erroneous dates. Brother Aaron Collins ("Call") Smith, born Apr 1820 IN - 29 Jun 1911, did serve and is buried here. (He is recorded as Aaron Collins Smith in a criminal record from Sep 1850 in Kane Co., IL; he was widowed, and listed brother George as his relative in veteran's records) Brother Alexander Smith is apparently this Alexander Smith (#54707917) who was born about 1838, Naperville, Illinois, and died 1862 at Stones River. Brother David J. Smith's service record not found. There were also two sisters, Mary H. "Polly" Smith Patterson, and Jane E. "Jennie" Smith Berrisford.

David J. Smith's wife (married 1860 Kane Co., IL) was Emily/Emma Goodroad, daughter of Charles Millet dit Beauchemin Goodrode and Charlotte Senecal dit Lussier (listed as daughter of Jean Baptiste Senecal dit Lusier and Josephte Anderson in her marriage record). Eliza was a granddaughter of Jean Baptiste Lussier (L'hussier) and Marie-Veronique Goulet - they were distant cousins.
*********************
Zoe/Sophie/Eliza apparently left Canada with the 2 McDonald/MacDonald children shortly after Archibald's death; his family did not know what became of them until the early 1900's.

Alexander Smith married Ida May Brooks (#116777854) on 30 Oct 1888 in Council Grove, Kansas. They apparently had a daughter Edna Pearl [Roberts] Clayton, 3 Nov 1889- 9 Jun 1978 (#25623337). Ida subsequently married Robert Roberts and possibly a Mr. Patton.

Orpha Pardee, 36, born Dwight, Illinois was residing with George Smith and family, along with Aaron Call Smith, in Council Grove, Kansas, in 1905. Orpha E. (Smith) Hamlin was residing in Arrickeree, Lincoln, Colorado in 1910; age 40, born IL, 1st marriage, 5 years, no children, parents born IL/France; in 1920; age 52, born IL, parents born IL/France. Husband John Thomas Hamlin, farmer, born Iowa, about 1870/1871. His memorial is # 101563911. (Albert's obit says she was living in Arriba, Colorado.) On 26 Nov 1927, at Sayre, Oklahoma, Mrs. Orpha Hamlin of Arriba, CO. married John Hawthorne of Crawford, Roger Mills, OK; R. A. Andrews, Justice of the Peace officiating, witnesses C. L. Clearman & Winifred Allen.

Albert P. [sic] Smith, born Nov 1870, IL, father born IL, was residing in Denver, Colorado in 1900; occupation coal & ice Co. He married 21 Dec 1899 in Denver, Anna M. Ramsay, born Feb 1880 NY, parents born Wales/NY. Albert B. Smith's obituary does not mention a widow; it does say that he & brother Eck went to Cripple Creek, Colorado, about 20 years prior to his death. He was yardmaster at Canon City penitentiary & later chief of police in Cripple Creek. He was shot by a "saloon man."
