Georgie Sanford Holley was born the first of seven children to William and Lula Sanford in Ashville, Virginia. She acquired her education in Ashville and the Industrial School in Manassas, Virginia. Georgie was baptized by the Rev. J. P. Dawson and became a member of First Ashville Baptist Church.
After the passing of their parents, Georgie gained the responsibility of caring for her younger sisters and brothers (Skinny, Alberta, Oswald, Adelaide, Louise, and Helen). She later made her home in Philadelphia and married the late James E. Holley. They had no children.
