MR. ABEL ROBINSON
DIED LAST FRIDAY

Many friends thoughout this section will regret to learn of the death of Mr. Abel Robinson, a former resident of LaFayette, which occured in Roanoke last riday at the home of Mr. Jas. Longshore, with whom he had been living for some years. After funeral services at Roanoke, conducted by Rev. J.W. Rucker and Rev. R. E. Taylor, the remains were brought to LaFayette Saturday afternoon and interred in the city cemetery.

Mr. Robinson was about 78 years of age and many years of life were spent in LaFayette. Big-hearted, generous, and kind, he had many friends. He was a Confederate veteran and served in Co. I, 47th Ala. Reg.

Abel Lewis Robinson, Jr.

Abel Lewis Robinson was born circa 1840 to Abel Lewis and Sarah Robinson in LaFayette, Alabama.

Abel enlisted first info "LaFayette Guars" Co. A, 7th Alabama Infantry. His term in this company expired in April 1862. When that company disbanded, Abel enlisted into Co. I, 47th Regiment, April 18, 1862 in Loachapoka, Alabama. He was promoted to Sergeant Major. January 10, 1863. Abel was admitted to General Hospital, Charlottesville, Virginia on August 11, 1862 for a wound from the Battle of Cedar Run, August 9, 1862; Chimborazo #4, Richmond on March 3, 1863 for dysentery; General Hospital, Howard's Grove in Richmond on August 10, 1863 for a thigh wound; Way Hospital, Medidian, Mississippi on February 17, 1865 for a wound. In June 1901, he filed an application "for relief for Confederate soldiers" and was approved. He listed his total property value as $850.

Abel married Mary E. Callahan, August 31, 1884 in Chambers County, Alabama. She died December 1913, Abel died March 7, 1917 in Roanoke, Alabama, they are both buried in LaFayette Cemetery. There were no known children.

Abel's brother, John Hall Robinson (born circa 1835) married Mary L. Adams (born circa 1834), May 8, 1855 in Chambers County. Both were born in Georgia. Two children, Martha and Sallie were born before 1860 in LaFayette. John served as 1st Corporal, Co. C "Tom Watt's Grey's", 14th Regiment, Alabama Infantry, he was discharged for health reasons during the middle of the war.

Their uncle, John H. Robinson also enlisted into Co. I, 47th Regiment on October 26, 1862 in Loachapoka, Alabama. John was admitted to Chimborazo #4, Richmond on March 21, 1863 for dysentery (a few weeks after Abel) after being transferred from General Hospital #9, in Richmond.

Another uncle, Jesse Berryman Robinson, I (January 21, 1814 - May 14, 1871) served the Confederate States by leading an Alabama Home Guard unit. Jesse married Martha Ann Carlisle, February 24, 1839 in Chambers County. She is the daughter of William C. Carlisle. Jesse, and some of his children are buried at Canaan Cemetery near Waverly, Alabama. Their children were William W. C. (born circa 1840) married Georgian V. Turner, December 10, 1857 in Chambers County, Thomas A. J. (born circa 1841), Clarissa E. (born circa 1844), Jesse B. (born circa 1846), Malinda (born circa 1847), and Sarah V. (born circa 1849).

Their son, Jesse Berryman Robinson, II enlisted in Co. K, 8th Regiment "Southern Guards", Alabama Cavalry on March 1, 1863 in Milltown, Alabama. Jesse was wounded three times, once in the thigh near Aiken, South Carolina, he left the hospital in Augusta, Georgia in February 1865 and was at home on wounded furlough when the war ended. Jesse married, February 27, 1871. His children were Jesse B., III, Mary E., Clara C., Willis C., Audrey, Mrs. Carlisle, Mrs. Holstein, Mrs. Molsby, Walter, and Cary Robinson. Jesse served as commander of Waverly Camp, United Confederate Veterans. He applied for Alabama Confederate Pension in 1922.
