Luther Dewitt Gillis, 85, of Glenwood passed away Monday, September 14, 2020 at his residence.

He was born in Wheeler County, March 17, 1935, to the late Adolphus and Jewel Bright Gillis. Mr. Gillis attended Glenwood Church of God and was a longtime employee of Jim Bob’s 19 & 46 where he was well known for his delicious homemade biscuits and fried chicken. He worked very hard to provide for his family and was always willing to lend a helping hand when needed. He enjoyed preaching and fishing with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife: Vanzie Gillis; three sons: Kenny (Kit) Gillis of North Carolina, Jody Gillis, and Nate Gillis of Glenwood; one daughter: Robin (Melvin) Morgan of Glenwood; six grandchildren: Kenny Luke (Destiny) Gillis, Mary Kate Gillis, Shane (Carley) Gillis, Shaun Gillis, Walter Morgan, and Evan Lawrence; five great- grandchildren; Sister: Voncille Nelms of Rincon; Brother: Ray (Brenda) Gillis of Rincon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his grandson: Alex Lawrence; two daughters-in-law: Lisa Gillis and Mary Gillis; two brothers: Harold Gillis and D.W. Gillis; and one sister: Christine Williams.

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the family will have a private memorial service. Towns Funeral Home of Alamo is in charge of arrangements.
