George VanGilder Hughes, M.D., 86, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007, in St. Barnabas Nursing Home, Richland. He was born July 1, 1921, in Pittsburgh to the late George Henry and Sara VanGilder Hughes and lived his entire life in the Pittsburgh area.

George graduated from Avalon High School and Washington & Jefferson College, received a degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1945, served in the Army ROTC while attending the school and was commissioned as a captain in the Medical Corps following graduation.

In 1949, he was appointed to the National Guard and drafted in 1951 to serve with the Army's 2nd Infantry Division, 2nd Medical Division during the Korean War. He was the chief medical officer at an aid station on the front lines, passed the American Board in Internal Medicine and moved to the 121 Evacuation Hospital, Seoul, Korea, until the end of the war. George was honorably discharged in 1953 and awarded the Bronze Star, the Combat Medical Badge and the Korean Service and United Nations Service medals.

Returning to the North Hills, Dr. Hughes opened a private practice in internal medicine in Perrysville in 1953 and later moved his office to West View. He was on the staffs of Allegheny and Suburban General hospitals and chief of the medical staff at North Hills Passavant Hospital. In 1988, after 35 years of medical service in the North Hills, George retired from private practice and became the medical director of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit at North Hills Passavant Hospital for several years.

George's memberships included Hiland Presbyterian Church, the American Medical Association, the Pennsylvania and Allegheny County Medical societies, Lodge 45 F&AM, Phi Delta Theta fraternity and Alpha Omega Alpha.

Husband of Edna Mae (Thomas) Hughes and the late Martha Jean (Stark) Hughes. Father of Linda Hiser (Ted) and Kenneth George and Jeffrey Charles Hughes. Stepfather of Gerilee Finney (Michael) and Gerald Edward Bumbaugh Jr. Grandfather of Aric Hughes Hiser and Garrett Bevin Hiser. Stepgrandfather of Kelly Cristina and Kristen Michelle Finney and Gerald Edward III, Jamie and Jennifer Bumbaugh. Brother of the late John Aiden Hughes and Faith Roolf (Edward, of Carnegie). Uncle of numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the H.P. BRANDT FUNERAL HOME, 1032 Perry Highway, Ross. Interment will be in Allegheny County Memorial Park.
