Alvis was born on March 19, 1937, to the late James and Minnie Bishop Hancock. Wayne was a 1956 graduate of Franklin High School. He married Geraldine Martine on August 17, 1956, in Hearne. He was employed with GATX for 30 years before his retirement as a welder. Wayne was a member of the Elliott Baptist Church for 71 years, serving as a deacon for 48 of those years as well as song leader.
Wayne loved sports. He especially had a love for football and while attending Franklin High School, he was the most valuable player for the Franklin Lions. Later in life, he loved watching his sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren play sports.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, James and Minnie Hancock; sister, Eddie Ruth Barnett; and brothers, James Hancock and infant Travis Hancock.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Geraldine Hancock, of Elliott; daughters, Ellen Amos, and Deana Houston and her husband, William Houston, III, all of Elliott; sons: Gerald Hancock and his wife, Kate, of College Station, Jack Hancock and his wife, Susan, of Franklin, and Jamie Hancock, of Stephenville; grandchildren: Erica Amos Boller and her husband, Jon, David Gene Amos, Jr., Cody Hancock and his wife, Katie, Brittany Sorsby and her husband, William, Amber Jutson and her husband, Runt, Hannah Hancock, Billy Houston, Grant Hancock, Levi Hancock, and Josh Amos; great-grandchildren: Tony Henderson, Madilyn Jutson, Ellie Hancock, Eli Jutson, Emma Jutson, Karter Sorsby, Ramsey Hancock, Kimber Sorsby, Kennedy Boller, and Chase Boller; sisters, Opal Green, of Franklin, and Annette Nichols and her husband, Buddy, of Friendswood; brother, Leslie Hancock, of Elliott; other relatives and many friends.
