Obituary from the Greenville Democrat, Sept. 24, 1902: "JOHN HOLZAPPLE (sic), an oldtime citizen and drayman of Greenville, died at his home on Warren street, last Laturday (sic) evening, aged about 82 years. He was a member of the 65th O.V.I. during the war and a well respected German citizen, born in Woolsen (sic), Germany, and a resident of Darke county since 1847. Funeral at 2p.m. yesterday, services by Rev. Stricker. An aged wife, four sons and one daughter survive.

Mr. Holzapfel's health had been failing for the past couple of years. He was a pioneer of the county, having located in this city some fiftyfive years ago and followed draying until age and disease compelled him to retire. He was aged nearly 82 years. A wife, one daughter and four sons survive him. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Evangelical chuch on East Fourth street."
