Alvin Pierce Bevins, 87, of Coaldale, died Thursday in a Bluefield hospital following a short illness. He was born in Russell County, Va., he and had been a resident of Coaldale for the past 45 years. He was a retired coal miner, a member of the UMWA Local #6196 and a retired employee of the Eastern Associated Coal Company. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ida (Fulton) Bevins, two sons, four brothers and one sister.
Survivors include his wife, Blanche (Miller) Bevins; three sons, Lewis Bevins of Northfork, Charles Bevins of Coaldale and Edward Bevins of Pageton; one daughter, Mrs. Howard (Nellie) Davidson of Coaldale; five stepsons, Roger Riley of Linwood, Pa., David Riley of Newhall, Elwood Combs of Marcushood, Pa., Thurman Combs of Dayton, Tenn., and Lee Combs of Doothwyn, Pa.; four step-daughters, Mae Bryant of Maybeury, Pearl Wooldridge and Alice Childress, both of Linwood, Pa., and Doris Compton of Rocky Gap, Va.; one brother, Lawrence Bevins of Hinsonville, Va.; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell with Rev. T.L. Sizemore and Rev. Roy Lacy officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Bluewell. Grandsons and stepchildren will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call at the funeral home today from 5 until 9 p.m.
