Col. William Cheney was the son of William and Rebekah Cheney of Alstead. He married in Feb 1801 to Tryphena Hatch, d/o Phinehas and Keturah (Brown) Hatch. In 1810 he built a block of stores which he occupied until his death. In 1815 he built a large public house known as Nettleton's Hotel. In 1818 he built a large building called the "Tontine" designed for stores and mechanic shops. About this same time he sold the tract of land which was used by the city of Newport as a common. He was often a moderator and a selectman during the years 1816-1827 and at one time was a representative to the state legislature. He contributed to support the Newport Academy. He also was a deacon in the Baptist Church for which he donated the ground to build the church and the parsonage. He also became a colonel in the state militia. When Lafayette came to Newport in 1824 he visited the Cheneys at their home. Source: The Cheney Genealogy by Charles H. Pope, 1897. Children: Chloe(Metcalf), Philena(Prentice), Persis Hatch(Forbes), William Hutchinson, Tryphena(1.King, 2.Pearson), and Sophia(Manning), George Hallett, Alice(Dodge), Prentice, James Monroe, Charles Franklin, James Edwin, Rosetta Maria, Henry Martin. The image of a person which was added to this memorial is incorrect. In fact it is an image of colonel Cheney's son: William Hutchinson Cheney (memorial # 33820855) taken from the biographical sketch of W. H. Cheney in The History of Newport, NH by Edmund Wheeler, Concord, NH, 1879, pp. 338-339. The original image has the clear signature of W. H. Cheney below it and so cannot be that of his father.
