He was born September 24, 1917 at Irwin, Iowa, to the late Fred and Margaret (Wendt) Bargenquast. He served in the U.S. Army 34th Division in World War II, and was awarded the Silver Star. He was a carman for the Union Pacific Railroad, retiring in 1979 after 18 years of service. After retirement he enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He was of the Lutheran Faith, a life member of the VFW Post 737, and of the 34th Division, Webster City, Iowa.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Barbara E. (Culver) Bargenquast, of Council Bluffs; sons, Larry and wife, Vickie, of Santa Maria, Calif., Leslie, of Trinidad, Calif.; daughter, Rita J. Munsey and husband, Ronald, of Horn Lake, Miss.; five grandsons; one granddaughter; 3 great grandchildren; sister, Margaret VanHorne, of Brentwood, Tenn.; brother, Leo and wife, Lavonne, of Avoca, Iowa; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Body will be cremated, no viewing, visitation or local service. Graveside services will be held Monday 2:00 p.m. at the Shelby, Iowa Cemetery, where military honors will be provided by Shelby American Legion Post #240.
