Alfred's middle name may have been Monroe or McQuire. Alfred was born in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. His parents are probably Manasseh Carns Jr. and Elizabeth Sherrod Carns. Elizabeth died in 1838 and Manasseh died before 1850. In the 1850 Bullitt Co., Kentucky Census, Alfred Carnes is listed as a fanmaker. He married Miria (Mariah) Elizabeth Neill on Feb. 5, 1852 in Nelson Co., KY. She was the daughter of William B. Neill and Susannah Gray.

Alfred and Elizabeth came to Missouri in the mid 1850's. They moved to Dade Co., Missouri in about 1859.

They were the parents of 9 children:

Martha Neill Carns Cooper
Charles Bemus Carns
Mary Ellen Carns
Mina Belle Carns Nimmo
John Alvis Carns
Neff Gray Carns Akins Divine
