Gayle Forsyth Wadsworth
Gayle Forsyth Wadsworth, a dedicated life-long registered nurse, passed away June 29, 2017, in the Lodge Hospice Care Center in Holladay. She was 81 and would have been 82 in August.
She was born Aug. 12, 1935, in Teasdale, Wayne County, Utah, the 4th oldest of seven children of John Franklin and Marzella Potter Forsyth.
Gayle attended schools in Wayne County and was graduated from Wayne High School, Class of 1953.
She was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was only 16, and vowed to pursue a career in nursing while being hospitalized for the debilitating disease.
Gayle was graduated from the St. Marks School of nursing and Westminster College in 1956 and began working as a floor nurse at Steptoe Hospital in Ely, Nev. Eventually, she gravitated into Emergency Room nursing and spent much of her career taking care of trauma patients, first at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, then at Cottonwood Hospital in Murray and finally at Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, after her husband got a job teaching journalism at BYU.
She married Nelson B. Wadsworth March 28, 1958, in the Salt Lake Mormon Temple. The couple was active in the LDS Church, Gayle serving variously in the Relief Society and Young Women organization. She was proud of the fact that she served as Young Women's camp director for more than 15 years.
Gayle spent the last 10 years of her nursing career as a Home Care nurse, helping diabetic patients manage their disease, a subject she was well-qualified for because she had spent most of her life managing her own.
She was a cheerful, fun-loving person, who had a lot of compassion and tender, loving care for her patients. She was always rendering unselfish service, including inviting friends to dinner, often widows and widowers and others in need. She was an excellent cook. Her ultimate act of service was to bequeath her body to the University of Utah School of Medicine.
In her spare time, Gayle was an avid quilter with many ribbons for her fine art and craftsmanship. She also loved to dance and attend the annual Jazz Festival at Sun Valley.
Gayle is survived by three children: Denise Ferguson (Boyd) of Cottonwood Heights, Geri Wadsworth of Sugar House and Jon Wadsworth of North Logan. She is also survived by five grandchildren: James Ferguson of Cleveland, Ohio, Lisa Ferguson of Arlington, VA, Michael Ferguson of Austin, Tex., Gage Wadsworth of Layton, Utah, and Carin Reeves of Sugar House; three sisters: Carol Olsen of American Fork, Evie Forsyth of Orem and Janiel Friedland (Jerry) of Chicago. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Lori, two sisters, a brother and her parents.
The family would like to publicly thank the caregivers at the Lodge and those dedicated staff members at Valeo Hospice and Home Care, particularly Julie Witten, Cara Mickelsen, Kerry Wickman, Lisa Viewig, PJ Hill and Barbara Winberg.
A memorial service will be held for Gayle Saturday, July 8, at 11 a.m., in the Revere Branch LDS Chapel at 981 E. Revere Circle (5600 South) in Murray. Friends may call an hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the American Diabetes Association.
