For seven seasons (1977 to 1983), he played at the linebacker position in the National Football League with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Diego Chargers and Los Angeles Rams. Born David Ray Lewis, he attended Abraham Lincoln High School in California, prior to enrolling at USC where he played collegiate football. Selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the 2nd round of the 1977 NFL Draft, he totaled 97 career regular season games. Lewis distinguished himself when he achieved Pro-Bowl honors in 1980. After retiring from football, he worked as a high school football coach.
