Benjamin was was a bootmaker and a shoe store owner. In 1862 he brought his family to Utah where they lived in Salt Lake. He remained active in the church all his life.

After the death of his father, when Benjamin was young, his mother married Mathis Webster. Benjamin took his mother's maiden name when he became a man.

STEPHEN CROMPTON GONE.
Well Known Citizen Dies at the Age of 83 Years.
Stephen P. Crompton of the Eleventh ward passed away on Sunday night, at the advanced age of 83 years. He was born in Northfolk, England, and went to London while a boy. He later went to Norridge, where he was baptized into the Mormon Church by Claudius V. Spencer about fifty years ago.

He came to Utah in 1862, crossing the plains in Captain Homer Duncan's company. Soon after arriving here he entered the employ of William Jennings in his shoe and leather store. He subsequently obtained employment in the Z.C.M.L shoe factory. He was well known in Utah, and was for years a familiar figure at the "Old Folks" gatherings. He was genial in his disposition, which quaility, together with other admirable traits won him the esteem and friendship of hosts of people.

He is survived by a large number of children and grandchildren.

The funeral will be held from the Eleventh ward meeting house at 11 a.m., Thursday next. The remains may be viewed on that day from 9 to 10:30 o'clock, at the late residence, 643 east Sencond South. Interment will be in the city cemetery.
