Active Democratic Worker in Seventh Ward Dies at Age of 80 Funeral services will be held today for Aaron Hand. 80, for 73 years a resident of Camden, who died Wednesday. Services will take place at 2 p. m. at the home, 769 Spruce street, and burial will be in Harleigh Cemetery. Hand was one of the oldest residents of the Seventh Ward and was for years active in Democratic politics. Originally a silk hatter, he became interested in the single tax issue as propounded by Henry George, American author and political economist. In 1S86 when George received an independent nomination as mayor of New York, Hand stumped Manhattan for him. Only a coalition of the two strongest political parties prevented George's election. Hand gained a reputation as a political orator and his services were in demand at numerous political gatherings. He toured New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania and other nearby states at various presidential elections at the request of the National Democratic Committee. In 1910 he was appointed a turnkey at the county jail by Sheriff Nowrey aryi held that position 12 years. During the Non-Partisan campaign, Hand toured the city on behalf of commission form of government. When the Non-Partisans went into office, Hand was given a job in the water department. His job was to open valves in city wells. He retired about six months ago. Although he was a candidate several times for freeholder and councilman during the old city government. Hand never served in office. He was to have been a candidate at the November election for the unexpired term of the late Freeholder Edward S. Hyde. The post is being temporarily filled by Mrs. Mary D. Guthrie, the state's first woman freeholder, who was named to the office by the city commission In April. Mrs. Guthrie will serve until January 1, 1931. Hyde's term would have expired January 1, 1932. Although he received hut little schooling, Hand educated himself by extensive reading. He wrote on numerous topics and wrote several pamphlets against the prohibition law. Hand's wife, Georgianna, died in June. 1928, at the age of 80. The couple had one son. Clarence, who died in 1912 at the age of 38. Both Mr. and Mrs. Hand were born in Indian Mills, Burlington county. Hand is survived by a sfster, Mrs. Phoebe Munyan. of National Park, who is 87, and a niece, Mrs. A. Lincoln Michener, of Camden. He was a member of Hope Circle. B. of A; Germantown Lodge, O. S. of B., and Eyota Tribe, I. O. R. M.
