John Holmes of Ireland was one of my 2nd great-grandfathers. He died and was buried at sea, while sailing on the ship Thornton from Liverpool to New York with his wife, Mary, and his daughter, Fanny--who was my great-grandmother. The cause of death was "inflammation of the lungs." He was one of three people who died on that voyage. John was also the father of at least one other child, John.

The Thornton arrived in New York on July 28th, 1863.

The Holmes family is listed as English on the manifest, but they were Irish. His daughter, Fanny, married Andrew Neil of Wigtownshire, Scottland. They settled in Amber Township, Mason County, Michigan and were the first of the settlers to marry in that township. They raised 11 children, and many of their descendants still live in Mason County.
