Friend Kenyon was the son of Sheffield Kenyon and Mary "Polly" Maxson. He married Nancy Anna Garlock, daughter of Jacob P. Garlock and Maria Dunckel, about 1821.
The following information is taken from the Civil War Military Records received from the NARA, August 2003.
Friend Kenyon enlisted in the 160th Regiment, N.Y. Infantry on Aug 22, 1862, and was mustered in on Nov 21, 1862, from the town of Marion, Wayne Co., for an enlistment period of 3 years. Friend was 5'-5" tall with a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair. He was born in Herkimer Co., NY, and was a carpenter by occupation. He lied big time about his age. He said he was 44 when he was 62 years old. He enlisted as a private and was assigned to Company D. From the "Military History of Wayne County", by Lewis H. Clark, c. 1883, Friend also had to get a new set of teeth so the Army would take him.
He was marked present with the regiment during the times of the battle of "Cotton", "Bilsland" and the beginning of the "Port Hudson campaign". He was captured by the Confederates on June 23, 1863, at Brashear City, Louisiana but was paroled from June 24 to 29, 1863. We were marked present again with the regiment during July, August, September, and October of 1863. During November and December, he was listed as sick in Hospital at Franklin, Louisiana which is south of New Iberia where the Regiment stayed until January of 1864. In January and February, he was back and marked present with the Regiment probably because the Regiment moved to Franklin during those two months. However, Friend was transferred into the Invalid Corps on March 1st, 1864 as the Regiment prepared to embark on their Red River Campaign. He was transferred to the Veterans Reserve Corps on March 15th, 1864 in New Orleans, La. His length of time in the hospital is shown as 8 months for Chronic Diarrhea & Rheumatism and his character in the hospital was "good". It is shown that he mustered out at Savannah GA., on November 1, 1865, but his activities between March 15th, 1864, and November 1865 are not completely clear. The VRC muster roll for March 6, 1864 shows that he was then counted as being in the 6 Company, 190th Regiment, 1st Battalion, Invalid Corps in New Orleans, LA., which became Company K, 3rd Regiment, VRC. Pvt. Friend's disability is listed as Rheumatism and lameness and he had been off duty for two months. He also had not been paid since September 1, 1863, and had only been paid $25 of his bounty and was due another $75. His Certificate of Disability for discharge was dated the 18th of April, 1864 at Barracks, US General Hospital, New Orleans LA. However, the Company Muster Roll 7 months later, November 7, 1864, shows him to still be in Company K, 3rd Regiment, VRC but stationed in Washington D.C. So after duty with the VRC in Washington DC he must have been transferred to Savannah GA., where he was mustered out November 1, 1865.
