OBITUARY
Robert Stirling was born in Kempsey, now a part of the city of Glasgow, Scotland, Dec 25, 1835. His father died when Robert was but six weeks of age. He moved with his mother's family to Lower Canada, near Montreal in 1843. In 1849 he moved with the family of John Berry to Stevenson County, Illinois. After the death of Mr Berry, which occured about one year later, he continued to live with Mr Samuel Berry, son of John Berry, now of Black Hawk County, Iowa, until he arrived at the age of manhood. On June 18, 1864 he enlisted as a private in Co F, 142nd Regiment Infantry, and was a faithful soldier in the service of his country. In 1865 he moved to Grundy County, Iowa, was married to Ellen Felmly, June 12, 1869.
He was injured on Christmas Day, 1897, by falling from a load of straw, which was the probable cause of his death, which occured July 1, 1898. He leaves a widow and a family of five sons and six daughters, one daughter having died in infancy.
Robert Stirling was a loving husband and father, and a good citizen. The leading feature of his character was his uncompromising honesty and integrity.

LAID TO REST
The funeral of the late Robert Stirling was held Sunday, July 3, 1898. A short service was held at the home at 10:00 A M and at the Advent Church at 11:00. The service was conducted by Rev W E Ross of the M E Church, who took for the subject of his discourse, Issiah 41:13. The funeral was in charge of the G A R and was largely attended, over 100 carriages were in line as the funeral cortege proceeded to Fairview Cemetery.

Death of Robert Sterling
Robert Sterling, one of the old and respected farmers of Grundy County, near Dairyville, died on the first at the asylum near Independence. Last winter Mr Sterling fell from a load of hay and injured his spine. More recently his mind became infected as a result of his injuries and he was taken to the asylum where he grew worse. He was one of the most worthy and reliable farmers of that part of Grundy County. His body was brought to the home and funeral services were held on Sabbath Jul 3d at the Advent church three miles southwest of New Hartford, conducted by Elder Stewart of Waterloo. A large number of his neighbors and friends attended.
