Andrew Robertson was born 12 December 1799 in Tollcross, Barony, Lanark, Scotland. His father was William Robertson and his mother was Elizabeth Barton Robertson. He married Janet (Jessie) Young in 1827. He was a coal miner, which was an extremely dangerous and low paying job. They had nine children: William - 17 Dec 1824; Peter - 19 Apr 1826; James - 22 Nov 1827; William - 15 Oct 1830; Christina - 20 Dec 1830; Archibald - abt 1835; Elizabeth - 14 Sep 1837; Janet or Jessie - abt 1839; Marion or Marmie - 3 May 1844.

He joined the Mormon Church and left his family in pursuit of spiritual and financial gains that would uplift his family. Because of this, many in his family harboured ill feelings toward him. Using the Mormon Churches Perpetual Emigration Fund which he had to repay once established in Utah, paid for his trip. He sailed to the United States aboard the SAMUEL CURLING (a four masted sailing ship) where he arrived in New York City May 23, 1855 after a 30 day voyage. He went by rail to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he boarded the steamer AMAZON. He departed 27 May 1855 down the Ohio River to Cairo, Illinois. He continued aboard the AMAZON up the Missouri River to Atchison KS. He left Mormon Grove, Kansas on July 25, 1855 with the Charles Harper Company and arrived in Salt Lake City 29 Oct 1855.

Andrew settled in Spanish Forks, Utah a small community South of Salt Lake City. He took a second wife, Elizabeth, after arriving there. Andrew died 9 years after arriving in America on 17 Oct 1864. It was said by his friends that he had died of a broken heart [although comforted by Elizabeth, his Mormon wife according to the Utah census]. Several of Andrew and Janet's children and grandchildren came to America.

Janet, the wife in Scotland, a devout Presbyterian, said she would never follow Andrew to Utah. She died 3 Dec 1876 in Glasgow, Scotland at the age of 79.
