Mr. Abraham Hertzberg, well known in Brisbane commercial circles, died at his home, Carmody Road, St. Lucia, this morning at the age. of 81. Coming to Queensland in 1876 Mr. Hertzberg began business in Roma and later came to Brisbane, where he was founder of the firm of Abraham Hertzberg and Co., general merchants, of Charlotte Street. He took an active part in the affairs of the Brisbane Merchants' Association, of which he held the office of vice-president for one year. He also took a keen interest in the Chamber of Commerce, where his advice was invaluable. In 1919 he was elected to the council of the chamber and two years later was appointed its president. He was the first to be made a life member of the chamber. He was keenly interested in the sugar Industry, and also in the financial relations between the States, and Commonwealth. Some years ago he wrote several articles on the latter subject and was thanked in the Queensland Parliament for his efforts in the Stale's interests. Mr. Hertzberg was a prominent Free-mason and was initiated into the Raphael Lodge, No. 1850, English Constitution, at Roma, on December 28, 1880. He was installed as Worshipful Master in 1885. In 1904 he joined the Hiram Lodge, Irish Constitution, and was the Foundation Master of the Adolph Hertzberg Lodge in 1913. He was the first Grand Warden on the foundation of the Grand Lodge of Queensland in 1904. He was created a Past Deputy Grand Master in 1913 and Past Grand Master in 1917.
