Alice Andrade
August 16, 1928 ~ May 20, 2020 (age 91)

A lifelong resident of Alameda, Alice Andrade was born on August 16th, 1928. One of five children born to parents Dominga and Marcus d’Fonseca, she and her family became close with others in the tight-knit Cape Verdean community within Alameda. It was at a Cape Verdean social gathering that she met her husband James (“Jimmy”) Andrade, and the two married in 1948. They later welcomed son Mark and daughter Marsha, and raised their family right next door to Alice’s childhood home. Alice spent over 20 years working as a Library Tech at the Alameda Free Library, a job she enjoyed immensely. After retiring from the library, Alice spent several years volunteering at the Alameda Food Bank, a place that remained close to her heart. Alice was also a devout member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, where she could be found every Saturday evening, sitting in the same back-row pew an hour before mass—her own quiet time to talk with God. Alice was preceded in death by her husband James, sisters Lydia and Maria, and brothers John and Marcus. She is survived in her immediate family by her children Mark and Marsha, grandchildren Jamie (and husband Jesse), Miranda, and Nathan, great-grandchildren Juliana and Jaylen, nieces Sissy and Veronica, nephews Marcus, Benny, John, and Gerald, and “adopted daughter” Cathy. Alice will be remembered fondly by family and friends as someone who always helped others as much as she could, and opened her home to everyone for holidays, meals, or just for a visit.

Funeral services on Thursday June 4th will be closed to a very limited amount of immediate family.
