Rock Musician. A bassist, he was a member of the pioneering Rock and Roll band "Bill Haley and the Comets." Born Albert Floyd Piccirilli, he initially performed with Haley in his group "The Saddlemen" prior to replacing Al Thompson as bassist with "Bill Haley and the Comets" in 1955, all though he had previously recorded with Haley on the single "Rocket 88" in 1951. During his tenure, Rex was identified with his wild, bass-slapping playing style which made him a popular member of the ensemble. He recorded on the single "See You Later, Alligator" (1955) which achieved gold record status. Additionally, he performed with "The Comets" on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and appeared in the films "Rock Around the Clock" (1956) and "Don't Knock the Rock" (1956). Rex parted with Haley and along with other former "Comet" members, he formed the band "The Kingsmen" not to be confused with the 1960s group of the same name. He remained an active performer and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 with other "Comets" members.
