Watching an old movie tonight, WW-II memories of the bombing of Germany and the thoughts and stories of the innocent victims. Made me think of Mother. We three older children, John 1936, Joyce 1939 and Carolyn 1941, were still small when Dad joined the Army. Mom worked and with the help of our grandparents kept us all safe and healthy in his absence. Upon Dads return from Europe, like many other soldiers, he struggled to find a new start for our livelihood. He farmed for several years then in 1949 we moved to Oklahoma City where he practiced his trade of carpentry. All the time with Mother at his side helping in every way she could. Mother had three more children after Dad came home. Veda on New Years Eve 1946, Kathy in December 1947 and Butch in 1949.
Mom worked off and on as the kids allowed, she was a waitress at Katz drug store and Cattlemen's, she worked repairing airplane fuel bladders and also worked at Harris meat Co. then as a bookkeeper for Baker-Taylor Books.
Mother always had food prepared if anyone dropped in, expected or not. I remember in high school when we came home, usually with friends, Mom always had hot rolls, a pot of beans or stew for the kids to have a snack .. and this was before supper.
Mom once took a vacation to Washington State to visit our Aunt Eunice and cousins. She told me when coming home she had the airline reroute her flight giving her all the miles and stops they could. She said she never had so much fun. I think of her now as flying with the Angels above the clouds and it gives me comfort to know she is at peace with her loved ones in Heaven.
