Ed Phillips, 86, of Erie, died Thursday morning, Nov. 4, 1971 at 12:30 at the Erie Nursing Home following an illness of six months. He was born Feb. 20, 1885 at Newton, Ill., where he grew to manhood. In 1909 he came to the Kimball community and was married Jan. 25, 1909 to Josie Johnson. They had spent all their married life in the Kimball community where he was engaged in farming until six years ago when they retired from the farm and moved to Erie. Survivors in addition to the wife of the home are four sons, Roy Phillips of Kansas City, Mo., Ernest Phillips of Sandy, Ore., Arnold Phillips of Erie, and Merle Phillips of Oregon City, Ore.; 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; one sister, Minnie Babbs of Newton, Ill.; and four brothers, Charles and Howard Phillips of Newton, Ill., Harry Phillips of Florida and Ora Phillips of Peoria, Ill. The funeral service was held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Pierce Funeral Home with the Rev. Glenn Hawthorne officiating. Mrs. Fredrick Swan and Mrs. Hollis Dunham, accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Laura Watkins, sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "In the Garden." Bearers were Bennett Hadden, Raymond Whitworth, Dean Aikins, Claren Snider, Russell Page, and Arthur Carlson. Ladies arranging flowers were Mrs. Hadden, Mrs. Whitworth, and Mrs. Clyde Cook. Burial was in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Chanute, under the direction of the Pierce Funeral Home.
