Fred was the only son of Mathias and Hulda (Chack) Mathison. He was the first Boy Scout in Douglas County, Minnesota. He married Elvina Berg on July 2, 1938, in Mapes, North Dakota. In 1929, he was the youngest director of dealer accounting for General Motors. He was the President of Industrial Credit Company in Minneapolis, Minnesota for 30 years (1941-1971). In 1976, he became the first member of the Douglas County Historical Society.
